The last year has seen the minivan market become ever more competitive with all minivan models either receiving a significant refresh or a full update. All of them now have a multitude of features and options once reserved for luxury vehicles. We got to experience the newest minivan on the market, the Kia Carnival, on the scenic roads of Half Moon Bay and on Highway 1. The Carnival, which replaces the Sedona, is one of them and it redefines what a minivan can be for both individuals as well as families.

We drove a Carnival with the fully loaded SX Prestige trim level, which came with features such as a dual sunroof, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, LED lights both front and back, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system. Our test vehicle also came with the heated and ventilated second-row VIP Lounge Seating with power controls, wing-out headrests and leg extensions to provide an experience similar to an airline business class. In addition, we liked the Astra Blue paint which made the Carnival stand out in the parking lot.

As we navigated Half Moon Bay, we found the Carnival a very comfortable place to be, and not just for the passengers in the middle seats. The front seats were also heated as well as ventilated and had 4-way lumbar adjustments while the interior was quiet without heavy road noise coming into the cabin. Furthemore, rear seat passengers had dual screens for watching movies or playing video games. In addition, the Carnival comes with a V-6 engine producing 290 horsepower which provided us plenty of pickup on Highway 1.

In the end, with the Carnival, Kia manages to surpass expectations of minivan buyers who in this day and age, expect a lot. While still having features that families love, the Carnival gives some that they never knew they needed and the ability to accommodate 7 or 8 passengers comfortably. We anticipate the Carnival becoming a very popular choice for growing families who appreciate the never-ending practicality that it can offer.
