Quick Take: 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Jeep’s Grand Cherokee has been a mainstay among midsize SUVs for the last three decades. However, the previous-generation Grand Cherokee did not offer a third-row seat which led some shoppers to consider alternatives. With the all-new Grand Cherokee L, Jeep has made a third row standard and redesigned the interior to provide an experience on par with high-end family vehicles while still maintaining the off-roading ability that has made it one of the most popular SUVs in the United States.

The Grand Cherokee L we drove was a fully loaded top-of-the-line Summit Reserve trim level (which comes with 4-wheel-drive only) with the optional 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 (the only V-8 available among midsize family SUVs) that makes 357 horsepower and provides a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds. Numerous features came standard, such as heated second-row seats, a power-folding third-row, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system which made parking a breeze, UConnect 5 navigation with a 10.1-inch display, and Quadra-Lift air suspension which soaked up any bumpy roads with ease.

Our test vehicle was equipped with a 950-watt McIntosh sound system with 19 speakers and a 17-channel amplifier, which audiophiles will really appreciate when playing classic rock (as we were). Additional options were ventilated rear seats, an active noise control system which made the interior a quiet place when driving down Highway 1, and 21-inch wheels. The interior of the Summit Reserve trim level was exceptional and made the Grand Cherokee L a pleasant place to be.

All in all, families who have always wanted a vehicle from Jeep but needed that important third seat will cherish the Grand Cherokee L, but Jeep didn’t just make it longer and add a third seat. The stunning and comfortable redesigned interior, high-tech features, as well as the high level of performance both on and off-road of the Grand Cherokee L will provide midsize family SUV shoppers with a very well-rounded vehicle to put on their short list.
