Quick Take: 2021 Genesis GV80

As a completely new entry in the competitive midsize luxury SUV market, the Genesis GV80 is something that the Cartrast team has been looking to try out for themselves. We finally got the opportunity to do so during WAJ Media Days and we came away very impressed. With a design unmistakably distinctive from other luxury SUVs and loads of high-tech features to try out, we drove the GV80 both on the back roads of Half Moon Bay as well as up and down scenic Highway 1.

The GV80 we drove was the fully-loaded 3.5T Advanced+ version with a twin-turbocharged V-6 making 375 horsepower and a 16-way power-adjustable Ergo Motion driver’s seat that could adjust the bolsters under spirited driving conditions. Front seats were heated and ventilated while second-row seats were heated. Families will appreciate the 3rd-row power-folding seat which adds practicality and the panoramic sunroof which makes the interior nice and airy. Other features included a 21-speaker Lexicon sound system, remote smart parking assist for sliding into tight parking spaces without being in the vehicle, and a heads-up display.

Driving on Highway 1, the beige leather-lined interior of the GV80 was a very pleasant place to be, with the sunroof open, the fantastic stereo playing the latest music, and a very comfortable driver’s seat. Ergonomics were very good and we could easily utilize the controls both on the steering wheel and the center console. The engine provided more than enough power when passing while giving us the feeling that there was more power available when we needed it. Our positive experience in the GV80 was something that we felt other luxury SUVs on the market couldn’t match.

Ultimately, we think luxury SUV buyers and lessees would be ignoring the GV80 at their peril as they would be missing out on an excellent driving experience. Genesis has come a very long way in such a short time and the GV80 demonstrates how good modern luxury SUVs are, offering solid doses of staggering resplendence and a high amount of practicality. After some time with the GV80, we believe other shoppers will quickly share our views.
