For the 2022 model year, Toyota has made some updates to its sought-after Tacoma. The 4x4-only Trail Edition trim gets a 1.1-inch front and 0.5-inch rear suspension lift to make venturing off the beaten path less challenging while the TRD Pro trim gets the same suspension lift along with new upper control arms and new wheels. With these new updates to the Trail Edition and TRD Pro versions of the Tacoma, the reputation of the midsize truck is enhanced further.

On the TRD Pro, the major updates are the custom-tuned Fox internal bypass shocks and new forged aluminum upper control arms which allow for the 1.1-inch front and 0.5-inch rear suspension lift. The changes bring improvements for trail and obstacle clearance with a 36.4-degree approach angle, 24.7-degree departure angle, and 26.6-degree breakover angle. The new black wheels have a wider track width and updated Goodyear Territory all-terrain tires.

The outside of the TRD Pro gets the options of a new Electric Lime color while there is new TRD Pro stamping on the rear quarter panel of the bed. The 6-speed manual transmission is still available and all TRD Pros are in double cab form with the short bed. A Multi Terrain Monitor comes standard and allows the driver to utilize front-, rear- and side-cameras to check for obstacles.

Trail Edition Tacomas, based on the SR5 trim and only available in 4×4 Double Cab configuration, gets its suspension lift courtesy of taller coil springs in the front and a spacer between the rear axle housing and leaf springs in the rear. The approach angle improves to 34 degrees while the departure and breakover angles improve to 23.6 and 26.4 degrees respectively. A locking rear differential also comes standard.

Other changes to the Trail Edition include a bronze-accented grille with TRD Pro-style “TOYOTA” lettering and bronze-finished 16-inch wheels with new Goodyear all-terrain tires. Lockable bed storage comes standard while the driver’s side storage includes insulation and can double as a cooler. A 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat featuring 2-way power lumbar support as well as an 8-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility also come with all Trail Edition Tacomas.

Both the TRD Pro and Trail Edition get a 3.5-liter V-6 making 278 horsepower standard along with Toyota Safety Sense-P, which includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure alert. With the updates to the TRD Pro and Trail Edition variants of the Tacoma, Toyota’s midsize truck will likely become even more appealing and some existing Tacoma owners may likely upgrade to these new versions. The Tacoma will remain a powerfully compelling option for midsize pickup shoppers.
