2022 Subaru BRZ Preview

One of the most affordable sports cars on the market, the BRZ has been revised completely for the 2022 model year and is now the lightest rear-wheel-drive 2+2 sports car in America. Subaru has updated the BRZ with more power, better handling, a 50-percent increase in torsional stiffness, and a nicer interior, while retaining a focus on pure driving fun.

Notably, the 2022 BRZ now has a 2.4-liter horizontally-opposed four-cylinder Boxer engine that generates 228 horsepower. As this new engine sits low in the chassis, the updated BRZ has a center of gravity even lower than the previous-generation BRZ. There are two transmission choices: a standard six-speed manual and an optional six-speed automatic that has a Sport mode. To increase lightness, the roof, front fenders and hood are aluminum, making for an estimated curb weight under 2,900 pounds.

Buyers have two trims to choose from, Premium and higher-end Limited. Amazingly, the 2+2 seating and folding rear seats enable the BRZ to carry a mountain bike or even four race tires and tools for track days. In addition, with a new interior, the BRZ has a customizable 7-inch digital dashboard with an 8-inch infotainment touch screen in the center. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard.

With the updated BRZ, Subaru will be targeting customers who have wanted an affordable sports car, but wanted one that was more refined. We’re interested to see how consumers respond to the BRZ as it has become more practical, more powerful, and more comfortable, all attributes that were once lacking in affordable fun cars, but will soon be the standard, helped by the new BRZ.
