Quick Take: 2019 Genesis G70
The Genesis G70 is designed to compete directly with the BMW 3-Series. And boy does it succeed. Those who feel that the 2019 3-Series is too large and expensive for their needs should sample the G70. The G70 Dynamic Special Edition we sampled had the turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 making 365 horsepower paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission as well as all the sport-oriented options performance-oriented drivers cherish. Turbo lag was never a problem while driving on the winding roads in the hills of Carmel Valley. Steering feel was very good too, reminding us of the vaunted heavy steering feel in older BMWs.
In addition, the interior is excellent. Our test car had black diamond-quilted Nappa leather with red stitching both on the seats, door trim, and dashboard. Speaking of the seats, when you put the car into sport mode, the side bolsters tighten up, holding both driver and passenger in place during spirited driving. Something to note if you plan to frequently carry passengers is that the back seats are not the best place for larger passengers, but they will not complain on trips less than an hour.
Shoppers considering a BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4/S4, or Lexus IS, should take a serious look at the G70. The back seat may be a bit cramped, but if it’s a driver’s car that you’re looking for, the G70 more than fits the bill.
