Quick Take: 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 electric vehicle has been long-awaited by the Cartrast team as it helps reimagine what an EV can be. With its footprint resembling that of a 5-passenger compact SUV, the Ioniq 5 is likely a vehicle that can get more consumers to convert to something all-electric without making the sacrifices that have typically been associated with that change. In addition, because the Ioniq 5 is not designed around accommodating an internal combustion engine, Hyundai has made the design look like something from the future, and we dig it. We also managed to get a short experience behind the wheel and had a very fun time.

The Ioniq 5 we sampled was the all-wheel-drive Limited trim with front and rear electric motors that put out a combined 320 horsepower. Range is an estimated 256 miles on a full charge, which is more than ample for most families. We drove the Ioniq 5 on the winding roads in the hills of Malibu and appreciated the comfort that the airy cabin provided. Our test vehicle had the gray two-tone interior which made the interior an incredibly pleasant place to be while the ergonomics were very well done, with dual 12.3-inch screens. There is also plenty of space for front and rear passengers to move around and a lot of cargo room in the back to accommodate almost everyone’s things.

Our Limited trim test vehicle came with features such as 20-inch alloy wheels, ventilated front seats (we were happy to have them in the Southern California heat), a head-up display, 360-degree view camera, and a Bose sound system that we really liked. Numerous features come standard, such as the dual touchscreens, navigation, ultra-fast charging, an 8-way power driver’s seat, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and alloy wheels. Engineered to introduce more people to the benefits of electric vehicles, we think Hyundai will have no trouble at launch delivering the Ioniq 5 to numerous homes across the country, and we think some compact SUV shoppers may end up going full-electric once they sample the Ioniq 5.
