With the attraction of SUVs showing no signs of abating, Toyota has introduced a new utility vehicle based on the popular Corolla. Called the Corolla Cross and available with all-wheel-drive, this new model is designed to appeal to customers who prefer the maneuverability of a compact sedan but the utility that an SUV can provide. With the Cross, Toyota can combine ride comfort, a high level of spaciousness, and efficiency into one vehicle.

All Corolla Crosses come with a 4-cylinder engine making 169 horsepower with all-wheel-drive as an option. An automatic continuously variable transmission is standard. The base front-wheel-drive version gets an estimated 32 miles per gallon combined while the all-wheel-drive vehicles receive an estimated 30 miles per gallon. In addition, the Corolla Cross can tow up to 1,500 lbs.

Customers can choose between 3 trim levels: base L, midrange LE, and top-end XLE. Available features include a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 10-way, power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar as well as heated front seats. Other high-end options are a power liftgate, an 8-inch touchscreen, and a 9-speaker JBL sound system. Among the standard features are a 60/40-split folding rear seat, LED front and rear lighting, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. In the safety department, a blind spot monitor comes standard on LE and XLE, while Parking Assist with Automatic Braking is standard on XLE trims.

Once the Corolla Cross goes on sale, it may be possible that individuals considering a new Corolla sedan may put the Cross on their list as an alternative. With its additional utility as well as an all-wheel-drive option, the Corolla Cross has the potential to shake up the already boisterous SUV market.
