With crossovers being more popular than ever, Hyundai debuted the upcoming all-electric IONIQ 5 midsize SUV to the world last week. Sporting a roomy space-age interior and a design which is reminiscent of the Pony, Hyundai’s first-ever production car, the IONIQ 5 is intended to demonstrate how compelling Hyundai can make a modern EV. Due to its novel characteristics, the IONIQ 5 looks to have the potential to shake up the EV market.

Notably, the interior gets a “Universal Island,” a moveable center console that can slide back as much as 140 mm and allows for a greater amount of roominess in the IONIQ 5. Many interior touchpoints such as the seats, headliner, door trim, floor and armrest use eco-friendly, sustainably sourced materials, such as recycled PET bottles, plant-based (bio PET) yarns and natural wool yarns, eco-processed leather with plant-based extracts, and bio paint with plant extracts.

In the powertrain department, customers can pick between a 72.6 kWh battery and a smaller 58 kWh battery as well as front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. When equipped with the larger battery and rear-drive, the estimated range can be up to 480 kilometers, or close to 300 miles. In addition, the IONIQ 5 supports 400 volt and 800 volt charging infrastructures without the need for adapters. Furthemore, the vehicle has a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, which allows owners to charge almost any electric device, such as scooters or camping equipment, from the IONIQ 5’s battery.

As for high-tech features, the IONIQ 5 has an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display which effectively turns the windshield into a display screen. Also, the cockpit features a 12-inch, full-touch infotainment screen and hoodless 12- inch digital gauge cluster which can be customized to provide the information wanted by the driver. Also, adjacent to the gauge cluster is a metal insert that can accommodate a multi-purpose tray holder.

Expected to arrive in American showrooms before the end of 2021, the IONIQ 5 will be a significant addition to the market’s choices of electric vehicles. With a high amount of range, high-tech features, and an inspiring crossover design, we think people will want to get behind the wheel and try out this new Hyundai EV experience for themselves.
