The Forester has long been popular with individuals who make it a point to venture off the beaten path over the weekend. For 2022, along with an updated front end with a redesigned grille and headlights, Subaru has introduced a new version of the Forester to make those owners’ lives easier with the Wilderness trim, which brings 9.2 inches of ground clearance and exclusive wheels with all-terrain tires. With these changes, Subaru is resolving to maintain the Forester’s popularity in the ever-so-competitive compact SUV market.

For those needing to carry extra cargo, the roof rails have been redesigned and have a higher dynamic load capacity (220 pounds) and an 800-pound static load limit which allows for the use of a roof-top tent. Other updates include the latest version of EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which has a wider field of view and newer control software. Higher trims now get an Automatic Emergency Steering feature that can help the Forester avoid accidents at speeds less than 50 miles per hour. Those who opt for the top-end Touring trim can get the DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System which allows the driver to use hand gestures to change the set temperature of the climate control system.

Shoppers will have six trim levels to choose from: Base, mid-range Premium, aggressive-looking Sport, Wilderness, well-equipped Limited, and high-end Touring. X-MODE comes on Premium trims and higher for added off-road performance. All-wheel-drive will come standard along with a 182-horsepower four-cylinder engine mated to an automatic continuously variable transmission. The new Wilderness trim has longer coil springs and shock absorbers for added ground clearance with Yokohama GEOLANDAR tires for more traction on gravel or muddy roads.

With these updates, we anticipate the Forester will continue to be an in-demand crossover, with the new Wilderness trim level bringing some new customers to the Subaru brand.
