Quick Take: 2022 Volkswagen Golf R

As the company which arguably got the hot hatchback trend going with the Golf GTI in the late 1970s, Volkswagen has come up with the ultimate hot hatchback in the form of the 2022 Golf R. With a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that generates 315 horsepower paired to a 4Motion all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring capabilities, the Golf R provides a level of performance that even some dedicated sports cars cannot match. We managed to try out the new Golf R on the winding roads in the hills of Malibu and we came away astonished at how easily it could put a smile on our face.

The only option for the 2022 Golf R is a quick-shifting 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission (which our test car had) in place of a 6-speed manual. Other performance features included 14.1-inch cross drilled front brake rotors, vented 12.2-inch rear brake rotors, sport suspension, an XDS+ Cross Differential system for improved handling, and DCC adaptive chassis control system that could provide a relatively comfortable ride when wanted and a sporty setup when needed. All of this equipment added up to an experience that was loads of fun on the Mulholland Highway, despite being a practical four-door five-place vehicle. Acceleration out of tight corners was exceptional thanks to the all-wheel-drive and chassis control systems.

Numerous features come standard, such as LED headlights and taillights, a panoramic sunroof, 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, ventilated front sport seats that made a hot day very bearable, and Nappa leather trim. Tech features included an active blind spot monitor, adaptive cruise control, the Discover Pro infotainment system with a 10-inch display and navigation, a Harmon/Kardon sound system, Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, and heads-up display. Overall, we think car enthusiasts will cherish this iteration of the Golf R and will be impressed with the high level of performance it provides. And after our time with it, we can only imagine how many morning commutes can be made enjoyable with the Golf R.
