Quick Take: 2022 Ford Maverick

At present, Ford’s Maverick pickup truck is notably a difficult vehicle to obtain, largely because of how well-suited it is to the current market. The Maverick has also become noteworthy for how customizable Ford has made it, allowing owners to tailor equipment in the bed and the rear part of the center console to their liking. Smaller and more fuel-efficient than the Ranger and other midsize pickups for sale, the Maverick is a good fit for customers who reside in an urban environment and need a high amount of practicality.

The Maverick we tested was a front-wheel-drive version with the hybrid powertrain that makes 191 horsepower and gets 42 miles per gallon in the city, 33 on the highway, and 37 combined. Some owners, depending on their driving, can get a range of up to 500 miles from a full gas tank with the powertrain. While driving down Highway 1 in the Maverick, we found the pickup more than adequate, yet very fuel efficient. Front seat comfort was great, though we found that taller people may not be cozy in the back seats due to legroom on par with that in compact or subcompact vehicles.

Our test vehicle had the Lariat trim level which brought a multitude of features such as an 8-inch center touchscreen for the infotainment system, FordPass Connect 4G Telematics, an anti-theft system, ambient lighting, and LED lighting all around. Options included the Ford Co-Pilot 360 driver assistance system and a spray-in bedliner. Many of the standard features are geared towards usability with characteristics like 10 tie-down points, enclosed bed storage, and a 2nd-row bench seat that flips up for additional cargo.

With our well-equipped test example having an MSRP of $27,660, the Maverick is much less expensive than similarly equipped midsize pickups on the market while offering similar usability and greater fuel efficiency along with a corresponding level of comfort. Individuals who need a light-duty truck (with the emphasis on “light”) will cherish the Maverick greatly and as a result, there’s little wonder why they’re difficult to obtain right now.
