Quick Take: 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe
During the Western Automotive Journalists’ Media Days event earlier this week, we got some seat time with the plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe. Pairing a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor, the 4xe designation makes the Wrangler become much more efficient both on- and off-road. We wanted to see how this new powertrain handled as fuel economy is always something important when venturing out onto trails that generally don’t have a fueling station nearby.
Numerous features come standard with the Wrangler 4xe, such as a 9-speaker Alpine audio system, UConnect infotainment system with navigation and an 8.4-inch display, leather seats, 20-inch aluminum wheels, and LED lighting all over. Our test vehicle was optioned with a premium black soft top and adaptive cruise control along with forward collision warning. Unique to the 4xe, there are four E-Selec driving modes to choose from: a normal Hybrid mode, a full Electric mode, an eSave Mode that saves the battery for later use, and a regenerative braking mode to get more energy back into the battery when plugging in.
Performance was excellent, with the powertrain capable of delivering up to 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque as well as a sub-6 second 0-60 mph time. With a fully charged battery, the 4xe can travel up to 21 miles in electric-only mode. Though we didn’t have the opportunity to sample the Wrangler 4xe’s off-road chops, we engaged in some spirited driving and managed to get around 30 miles per gallon. Being easy with the throttle likely would have taken that MPG figure even higher. Road noise was not an issue while the ride was smooth, even on rough roads.
Getting at least 30 miles per gallon in a Jeep Wrangler along with 375 horsepower is a wonderful thing and we’re glad that the 4xe makes that possible. Off-roaders who don’t want to worry about the fuel situation when venturing off the beaten path will appreciate the plug-in hybrid powertrain on offer. Ultimately, the Wrangler 4xe heralds a more efficient way of exploring off-road and it’s something we think many consumers will get behind.
