Quick Take: 2021 Ram 1500 TRX

Across the country, pickup truck enthusiasts have very much been looking forward to the Ram 1500 TRX hitting the market. We were interested in the TRX too as it has the same supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 found in the Dodge Challenger, Charger, and Durango Hellcat models as well as the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. When one became available for us to get behind the wheel of during WAJ Media Days, we decided to try out the TRX for ourselves and discover what made it so special.

The TRX we drove came with numerous options such as heated and ventilated power front seats with 4-way power lumbar adjustment, heated and ventilated second row seats, LED lighting for the bed, power adjustable pedals, a power tailgate release, and a surround-view camera system which came in handy for parking, all of which were part of the TRX Level 2 Equipment Group. Additional options were a head-up display, 18-inch bead-lock capable wheels for off-roading, and a 19-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system.

Because of time constraints we were unable to sample the TRX’s off-road prowess. However, as we drove the TRX on Highway 1 with the powertrain putting down all 702 horsepower onto the pavement, we began to appreciate the work that went into the on-road handling of the TRX. Even under acceleration and at higher speeds, the TRX was remarkably stable and could maneuver around like a normal Ram 1500. There were 8 different drive modes to choose from: Normal, Valet, Sport, Snow, Custom, Mud/Sand, Rock, and Baja for traversing sand dunes. (We found ourselves in normal mode as there were no obstacles on the highway.) Under all conditions, the TRX was comfortable inside and we liked the intuitiveness of the UConnect infotainment system along with the 12-inch screen.

All in all, we now understand why so many people were eager for the Ram 1500 TRX to go on sale. It’s a pickup that has the performance, practicality, and off-roadability covered in one imposing-looking package. The TRX is more than likely finding its way to numerous garages with owners who will definitely appreciate its capabilities as much as we do.
