Since 1984, the 4Runner has built a reputation as a family-hauling, boat-towing, hill-climbing SUV that can adapt to just about any situation and also offers room for up to seven passengers. The only powertrain is a reliable 270-horsepower V-6 mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. Customers have seven trim levels to choose from: base SR5, midrange SR5 Premium with navigation as well as heated power front seats, trail-oriented TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium, off-road-optimized TRD Pro, luxury-oriented Limited, and style-optimized Nightshade. All 4Runners except the SR5 come with a four-wheel-drive system standard, with the Limited and Nightshade getting a full-time system while SR5 Premium and TRD levels get a part-time system. SR5 comes with two-wheel-drive with a part-time 4WD system optional. TRD Off-Road models are available with Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) that allows extended wheel travel at slow speeds for greater off-road capability while providing a nimble handling feel on pavement.
